Philadelphia Explore the City of Murals

Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, and also the City of Philadelphia, is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and is the “City of Murals”. Once the capital of America, Philadelphia has a history enriched with culture, history and symbolism. The city is a melting pot of races, traditions and immigrant cultures and also possesses amenities that only the city’s own heritage can provide. It is the home to the Liberty Bell and the Declaration of Independence, both tributes to the city’s revolution.

Public art is a way of life in Philadelphia with more than 3,600 massive murals, sculptures and mosaics integrated into the landscape. The stunning murals speckled across the city communicate the essence of vibrant neighbourhoods in the city.

The Association for Public Art, established in 1872 is America’s first private, non-profit civic organization dedicated to creating a “museum without walls” by integrating public art and urban design.  As a result, Philadelphia’s public art is unparalleled, and thousands of sculptures can be found throughout the city and can be toured.

Self-guided and group tours are available to enable visitors to see a wide variety of Philadelphia neighborhoods through the lens of community-based public art.

Mural Arts Philadelphia is America’s largest public art program, dedicated to the belief that art ignites change. You can explore the world’s largest outdoor art gallery by taking a Mural Arts Tours, a rare glimpse into the collection of over 3,600 murals, with a variety of both public and private tours available, including trolley, walking, train, and step-on.  Popular mural tours offer a firsthand glimpse into the inspiring stories behind Mural Arts’ iconic and unparalleled collection, which has earned Philadelphia worldwide recognition as the “City of Murals”. Along the way, people also learn about the culture of the neighborhoods, how the murals complement their environment, and the history of the Mural Arts Program.

All tours include detailed information about the murals themselves, the artistic process and the history of the diverse communities that serve as the backdrop for this unique art form.
