Day 3: Masaba Gupta ‘ Demi Couture’ collection on Ramp

Day 3 of PCJ Delhi Couture Week 2013 has Bollywood jam on ramp. Young designer Masaba Gupta showcased her latest collection. None other than Bollywood legend Anil Kapoor and his nephew Arjun Kapoor have walked on the ramp for young designer. Father Anil Kapoor and cousin Arjun Kapoor filled in for actress Sonam Kapoor as show stoppers for designer Masaba Gupta’s Satya Paul couture collection.
The uncle-nephew duo looked dapper in black sherwani teamed with white churidaar as they walked down the ramp amidst loud cheers from the audience.
“We are here because of Sonam. She was supposed to be here but because of some reason she could not come, so we were more than happy to come in her place,” said Anil, who was last seen on the fashion runway at the recently concluded Bridal week in the Capital.
For Arjun, it was a ‘surreal’ moment to share the stage with his superstar uncle for the first time. “I have been a fan of this man. So it is very difficult to explain what I am feeling right now. For me sharing the same stage with him is like life coming to a full circle. When I was backstage, I could hear the crowd swelling with joy the moment he was on the ramp”.
He Further said, “It is a very proud moment that I can today stand at the same footing as him. It feels very surreal. I took a flight with him to come down to Delhi. I think I have spent more time with him than I have in the past few months as he was busy with his work and I have been shooting. It is a nice way to catch up with a family member”.
Masaba , whose latest collection was titled ‘Demi Couture’, was happy to have the two men as her show stoppers.
Masaba said,“Sonam is my lucky charm and anything that comes from her is great. So it was amazing to have these two men on the ramp today. I have been a fan of Anil Kapoor since I was young and I loved Arjun in ‘Ishaqzaade”.
The couture collection was a shell of 25 pieces, which explored a combination of experimental silhouettes with textile fabrications, colours, sheer textures and patch worked prints.
The clothes were a combination of romanticism and modernity, giving a novel spin to exquisite classics. Tailcoat jackets were paired with lace shararas, gowns were given high necklines and lapels, and the Saree was draped over a sheer jumpsuit.
Masaba, who is known for her funky prints, this time, used flower motifs on her clothes.
“I x-rayed flowers and engineered them as prints on fabrics. The motifs of Daffodil, rose, iris, lotus and cosmos were interpreted via various techniques and the botanical patterns have been patch-worked, embellished, cutout and recreated as lace along with other textile fabrications,” the designer said.
Fabrics such as organzas, lycra knits, georgettes and chiffons were used to add to the wearbility of the clothes.
Cheering the young designer from the front row was her mother, actress Neena Gupta, along with directors Madhur Bhandarkar, Satish Kaushik and British fashion expert Trinny Woodall.
